چکیده

Inspired by recent TSG GERAN (Technical Specification Group GSM EDGE Radio Access Network) contributions, we propose a multiple–input multiple–output (MIMO) transmission scheme for GSM/EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) with two antennas on each side. Performance is compared to that of single–antenna transmission with one and two receive antennas, respectively. Also, an approximation for the bit error rate (BER) of maximum–likelihood (ML) detection is determined for MIMO transmission over frequency–selective channels. Joint channel estimation is included in our considerations and the influence of different training sequences on the detection performance is shown. One crucial point is the selection of suitable training sequence pairs. Here, optimum training sequences are compared to different sets of training sequences included in the current GSM/EDGE standard. Simulation results are given taking into account spacial correlation of the 2× 2 MIMO channel and good performance is obtained even for high subchannel correlations.

Diversity Interference Cancellation for GSM/ EDGE using Reduced-Complexity Joint Detection

In cellular mobile radio systems, multiple access is causing interference that limits capacity of the networks. The GSM system with multiple users can be interpreted as MIMO system with a desired user and (cochannel and adjacent channel) interferers. Using a multiple– input multiple–output (MIMO) multiuser joint detection approach for desired signal and one or more (strongest) interferers, netw...

Migration of Gsm Networks to Edge

Standardized in 3GPP as part of the GSM/WCDMA family, EDGE is a simple and cost-efficient upgrade that provides a more than threefold increase in both the capacity and performance of GSM/GPRS networks. EDGE is a digital mobile phone technology that allows improved data transmission rates as a backward-compatible extension of GSM. The structure of EDGE resembles to that of GSM network that enabl...

A High Spectral Efficiency Generalized Spatial Modulation Scheme for MIMO Fading Channels

The Multiple–antenna technique called MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) constitutes a key technology for modern and future wireless communications, which trade– off superior error performance and higher data rates for increased system complexity and cost. As an extension to the classical MIMO schemes, a novel technique called Spatial Modulation(SM) can even enhance the capability of MIMO sy...

Performance Analysis for Generalised Spatial Modulation

Abstract—In this paper, the performance of generalised spatial modulation (GSM) using large scale multiple–input multiple– output (MIMO) systems is analysed from an information– theoretic point of view. The analysis is extended to account for the average bit error ratio (ABER). We introduce a simple model for the capacity which allows us to derive a closed–form expression for the capacity of GS...
